Artwork: MIAD Architecture
Title: Mi Rancherito
Medium: Graphite and Charcole pencils Completion: April 5, 2018 Exhibition: In architectural design Mi Rancherito I wanted to design a building that described me and my culture. Due to the fact that my parents are Mexicans and I was born in America so I'm in the middle of two cultures. So I decided to blend them together my building. |
Artist Inspiration
In this piece I was heavily inspired by the traditional Mexican ranchos. While growing up I did see a lot of the time these type of buildings so me creating one was the best thing. In this piece I was influenced by Palacio de Correos de Mexico, this building is one of the most beautiful that I have seen which is why it was such an influence in my architecture piece. It displayed that old fashion look to it yet it still looked like a rancho. Yet,I wanted to use this building for a different purpose other that coreos, I wanted to have people live in them like in the novels I used to watch.
Planning:
When we were introduced to the project I knew from the beginning that I wanted to do something relating to my culture. There were many factors that I could include into my architectural piece due to my rich culture. I sadly have never been to Mexico to personally view it, but I have had cousins come from Mexico and brought picture to show us a glimpse of where my culture comes from. I have been intriged on how simple and unique the housing is at Mexico. Typically all of the building have a square look to them which is why I chose to keep my building a square shape,as well as the main shape to my building. I have a very clear view on what my culture is but it was bit difficult to find when it came to housing. This was all due to the fact that I was raise and born in America so I am used to the housing in America.
When planning what I was going to design was a bit tricky I now had an idea of what I had intended to do but was not sure as to what exactly I felt like was right for me. One of the ways in where I am able to display what I truly tend to draw is by doodling. I make many sketches and narrow them to three of the ones that catch my eye. Before sketching I decided to plan of the the three main things that had fit in my culture. So I decided to stick with faith, childhood, and American. I wanted to create something that would incorporate all this qualities while also being able to create something that catches the eye. So I began to doodle quick sketches that I believed could fit my main categories.

Process:
With my process I wanted to design a building that I could be able to relate to it in a more cultural way. So I decided to start sketches because by doing sketches I would then be able to choose and pick things from the sketches that would stick out to me. I tend to make quick sketches, these sketches consist of 2 min or less I tend to do this because it helps me focus on a bigger picture than to focus on detail. This also gives me time to be able to make as many of sketches as I need in order to be able to choose the best ones in the bunch.
In my first sketch I wanted to create a building that was a home, yet it would give out almost a church feeling. Due to the fact that my culture revolves heavily in faith I wanted to be able to incorporate the dome look that many of the churches tend to have. I also wanted to incorporate the overlapping look that many of the traditional houses have this was because I do tend to like that look that many of the "pueblos" have. Even though I have not personally been able to cherish the look many of these house have I did incorporate it. I wanted to be able to keep the dome look but not so much the look of a church because I wanted my building to have a feel like home.
This would be the second sketch that I had chosen. There was something particular about this house that made it feel like home. The reason as to why this made it feel like home was becasue of how typical this house is with a twist. This house looks to be like the perfect little American house, it would look like the houses that I would be able to see while passing my Neighborhood. In this sketch I wanted to incorporate the cylinder domes like the previous sketch but as I continue on with many of my sketches I decide to leave the look and stick to a more modern look of a dome and combine it with a porch.
This is the third sketch that really caught my eye. I took a bit longer with this sketch which was a bit odd due to the fact that I don't tend to take long in my sketches. The end result to me was amazing, which is why my building is based on this sketch.
Experimentation:
In this project I wanted to be able to able to experiment. Yet I was limited in what I could use at first I wanted to shade in my design with color pencils and markers. When it came time to shading I stumbled upon an old set of charcole pencils that I haven't used. So I decided to experiment with the charcole pencils and shadewith them as well.I used a blending stick to help with the harsh lines that the charcole left.
ACT Questions:
1. Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause effect relationship between your inspiration and its effect on your artwork?
Since my main idea or theme is self image, I wanted to depict how my childhood can also be put into play when it comes to architecture.
2. What is the overall approach the author has regarding the topic of your inspiration
My overall approach would be the mostly for the Mexican community since some of us can't go back to Mexico and visit out homeland I wanted to bring something that felt like home.
3. What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, culture, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
With my research I concluded that with my inspirations the artist tend to show values and culture.
4. What is the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?.
